Trade Area Geographical Description
The Highland retail and commercial area for grocery items, clothing, retail merchandise and consumer services encompasses portions of seven Illinois counties and one county in Missouri. For a distance of 45 miles to the east and to the north, the Illinois counties in the Highland retail trade area are Madison, Clinton, Bond and Montgomery counties and includes the communities of Carlyle, Greenville and Hillsboro and as far as Salem and Vandalia in Fayette and Marion County. For a distance of 30 miles to the west and south of Highland, the counties in the Highland retail trade area are St. Clair County in Illinois and St. Louis County in Missouri and includes the communities of Troy, Lebanon and St. Jacob and to a lesser extent all the Metro East communities and the St. Louis metropolitan area.

As set forth in the above summary of the population figures, the 2007 retail trade area resident population is estimated at 113,250 persons, which translates into 41,944 households (2.7 members per household) which does some or all of its weekly shopping for goods and services within the Highland trade area. The City of Highland estimates that the retail trade area population ranges anywhere from a low of 101,925 to a high of 118,913 persons, depending upon the type of trade or business being patronized.
