Fiber Technology Project

This is the place where you will find news, information, and facts about the Fiber Initiative Committee www.highlandilnews.com. We will keep you posted on all developments as they occur. There are three FIC committees including: Finance, Marketing, and Technology. Even though the three subcommittees are working independently they also work together and as mentioned the results of their findings will be posted here.

Iberg Road Reconstruction

This project upgrades Iberg Road from Broadway south to Coventry Way. The improvements include asphalt pavement 2 lanes with striped bike lanes, concrete curb and gutter, storm sewer, and sidewalks.

Northeast Quadrant of the Peripheral Route

The project extends Iberg Road north/northwesterly from Michael Road to Troxler at U.S. Highway 40. Improvements include constructing approximately 6,370 feet of new asphalt roadway as a rural typical section 2 lanes with paved shoulders (same as Troxler Avenue just west of U.S. 40), no sidewalk, striped bike lanes, and a new fully-actuated traffic signal system at U.S. 40. Improvements also include a grade separation structure carrying Iberg Road over the CSXT Railroad. Trestle Road will be realigned to meet the new road and help with the sight distance to the west.

Current Projects

6th Street Storm Sewer

The project includes the installation of new storm sewer from Walnut east to Lemon St., Lemon St. north to the creek, removal and replacement of concrete curb and gutter from Walnut to Pine, and milling and overlaying the asphalt surface from Walnut to Pine.

Paving Sludge Drying Beds

This project will pave with asphalt the existing sludge drying beds to allow additional sludge storage. We currently have three months storage capacity. This creates problems with land application in the winter and spring when the ground conditions are unsuitable. The additional storage will allow us better chances to land apply instead of landfill disposal. City personnel can land apply sludge for half the cost of landfill disposal

Sanitary Sewer Cleaning and Televising

Inflow and Infiltration (I and I) and tree root invasion is evident in the city's sanitary sewer collection system. The first step is to televise the mains and determine the extent of the problems. As part of the process, the mains are jetted (flushed with high water pressure) before a camera is placed in the main. We will begin our focus on the oldest sewer mains in Highland that were installed in the middle 1920's. The area includes mains between 6th St. and Lindenthal, and Chestnut St. to Poplar St.

Filter Building Construction

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency is requiring the city to enclose our outside filters with a building. There are four active and two unused filters that are open to the outside. We are erecting a simple structure upon the existing filter walls to cover all six.
