HIGHLAND AREA SCHOOLS

The community of Highland is known throughout the Metro-East for the excellent educational opportunities and extra-curricular activities. Area students attend schools in the Highland School District or St. Paul Catholic School in Highland.

Highland School District

The Highland School District includes two elementary schools in Highland: Highland Primary (pre-K through second grade) and Highland Elementary (third through sixth grade) that serve students in Highland and nearby Pierron. The program at Highland Primary, known as Kids In Christ, is privately operated. Other Highland district schools are Highland Middle School and Highland High School. The Highland School District has received numerous awards. In recent years, Highland High School was one of a select number of schools throughout the nation to be designated a U.S. Department of Education Blue Ribbon School. At the same time, Highland Middle School won the State of Illinois Blue Ribbon Award for Excellence. In addition, the district has one of the largest groups of national board-certified teachers in the area. The Highland School District has undertaken several building projects in recent years, including new additions and buildings to handle enrollment growth and life-health-safety upgrades.The Business Education Alliance (BEA) is an organization of local business leaders whose efforts support and strengthen educational opportunities for Highland School District students.

St. Paul Catholic

School St. Paul Catholic School provides a high-quality, faith-based education for students in preschool through eighth grade. Before- and after-school care options are available on site through Viking Kid Care. The school, located near St. Paul Catholic Church, is known for maintaining small classroom size and providing a strong, Christ-centered, academic program that includes state-of-the-art technology. This is complimented by successful music and art programs and a variety of athletic and other extracurricular opportunities. The standardized test scores of students, as well as the success of former St. Paul students as they go on to high school in either a public or parochial school setting, are testaments to the school’s record of high student achievement.Preschool programs that meet several half days per week are available for three- and four-year olds. A full-day pre-kindergarten program is another option for four-year olds.The area has other privately operated day care centers and preschool options.

6.8% of the population have earned a Master's, Professional, or Doctorate Degree, 13.8% had earned a Bachelor's Degree.
